Races on our Radar #39 – Lots of Low-Cost Races in This Edition

Here’s what Run Oregon has been keeping an eye on this week. Remember, if you know a good low-cost race, a really cool small event, an important registration deadline, or other fun running news, please send it our way so we can share it with our readers!

  • Free event: This Thursday is the Discovery Run at Road Runner Sports Tualatin. Remember, this is a free group run/walk where you get raffle tickets at various checkpoints and could win great prizes like running socks or even a pair of shoes! It starts at 6:30p and you can sign up when you arrive or online ahead of time for bonus raffle tickets.
  • Cool race for a great cause: The Mad Hatter Run 5k in Salem is this Saturday, September 30 at Wallace Marine Park. The $30 registration supports the Salem Dream Center, and what makes it unique is that the first three finishers in five age groups for both men and women will win medals designed by kids that go to the Salem Dream Center.
  • Want to get muddy? Or watch others do so? The first Stumptown XC race is Saturday, September 30 at Portland Meadows. XC races are a ton of fun to race or watch, and at $20 it’s a pretty good deal. Online registration closes at 6p on Friday.
  • Cheap race alert: Run a $20 10k or 5k in Newport this Sunday, October 1 at the Free Flight Run. The run offers online registration until midnight on Friday the 29th.

  • Cheap race alert: The Echo Sage Trail Runs in Echo, Oregon (also running on October 7) offers at 5k for $10, a 10k for $25, a 25k for $35, and a 50k for $50.
  • Run for Tigard K9 Offcers at the Tigard K9-K5. There’s a 5k, which is $30, and a kids race, which is $5. You can sign up online until 11p on October 5 for this race which is Saturday, October 7 at Cook Park. Chip timed by the fine folks at Uberthons.
  • Donation race: You pay what you can for the Run or Walk for Shelter in Forest Grove on Saturday, October 7. There’s a timed 5k and an untimed 1 mile. Funds support the community’s Temporary Emergency Shelter program.
  • Cheap race alert: Adults can sign up online for the Great Pumpkin Race 5k (in Bend) for $20 (it’s $25 DOR). The run is on Saturday, October 7 and support Elk Meadow Elementary’s Integrated Arts Program.
  • Price increase for The Zombie Chase 5k coming on Friday, September 29! Until then, this themed 5k is $35. After that it bumps up to $40. The race is on Saturday, October 7 in Dayton.
  • Cheap race alert: ORRC’s Blue Lake Runs are offering a half marathon for $40 if you sign up by October 12. (There’s also a 5k for $35.) The race is on Saturday, October 14 in Troutdale.

That’s all for this installment.

About Author

We started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. We also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support local race organizers.
