Run Oregon Test Kitchen: Perfect Bars

Chances are, you’ve seen Perfect Snacks in grocery stores. They aren’t in the granola bar section like other protein bars though .. You’ll find these in the refrigerated section. What this means is these are FRESH and different than your average portable snack.

There are currently three types of Perfect snacks: the Perfect Bars, the Perfect Bites, the Perfect Peanut Butter Cups, and the Perfect Kids and they all look perfectly perfect to this fan of sweets. Kate and I were both lucky enough to get samples of the Perfect Bars in three different flavors. Below you will find our reviews of the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter bars, the Peanut Butter bars, and the Coconut Peanut Butter bars. But first, a bit about the product and the company.

My first concern was the fact that these snacks needed to be refrigerated, and I’m in my car a lot going from appointment to appointment. Did I need to keep them cold? It turns out, you can leave the bars out of the fridge for an entire week! The bites and the peanut butter cups can be left out for 2 days, which still more than meets my requirements.

As you may have noticed, there are a lot of products found in grocery stores today that say they are “protein packed,” but if you know anything about nutrition, you know that there’s a bit of false advertising in many of these products, which are often more like a candy bar than a healthy option for an athlete. However, Perfect Bars contain whole food sources, with minimally processed ingredients, like nut butter and eggs. This is much easier on your body, as well as more nutritious. Take a look at the label on a Perfect Bar and you will likely recognize (as well as be able to pronounce!) the names of most ingredients. But the best part is these healthy snacks actually taste like a treat.

Perfect Bars are packed with 20+ Organic Superfoods. As an athlete, this is great news for you and your body! Get your vitamins and minerals in one of these on-the-go options, and also feel good in your decision in eating a non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher product. There is also organic honey in the bars to sweeten the deal. This honey, used way back in original creation by the founders as kids and still used today, helps bind the whole food proteins and will provide you as the consumer with a cookie dough-like texture that is unique to Perfect Snacks.

Now onto the best part of the review .. The taste.

Perfect Bar, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor:

Nikki’s thoughts: This was the first bar I tasted, as I love peanut butter and dark chocolate both fairly equally. This flavor provides a bit of sweet and a bit of salt and it did actually taste a lot like a scoop of cookie dough. The honey came through strongly in this flavor as well as the others I tried and it was delish! Perfect Snacks took their original peanut butter recipe and added some fair trade dark chocolate chips and a pinch of sea salt for good measure. Then poof! Perfect snack indeed.

Kate’s thoughts: The health benefits of Perfect Bars are reason enough to try them, but the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter tastes so delicious and indulgent that I’d buy it as a straight dessert. Chocolate and peanut butter are a classic combo, and Perfect Bars aren’t overthinking what works. The natural flavors come through and are sweet without being saccharine. Beyond just the taste, refueling with protein is key after a hard run. Safe to say both my muscles and my tastebuds are happy with this addition to my post-run routine!

Perfect Bar, Peanut Butter flavor:

Nikki’s thoughts: I didn’t think that anything could get better than the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter bar, but then I tried the regular Peanut Butter, which was just as good, if not better. These bars contain the family recipe, with freshly-grounded, organic peanut butter and honey. There was actually no need for the chocolate, which is saying a lot, because I LOVE chocolate.

Kate’s thoughts: Classic Peanut Butter is my favorite of the three flavors. The consistency is smooth, and the sweetness is more reserved, making it my go-to for a quick breakfast.

Perfect Bar, Coconut Peanut Butter flavor:

Nikki’s thoughts: Last by certainly not least, I tried this flavor and Yum. My. The peaunt butter shines through, but mixed with the real shredded coconut and signature honey flavor, it really doesn’t get much better. All three ingredients mixed well with my flavor palette.

Kate’s thoughts: Coconut can be a more polarizing flavor, but if you like the taste of coconut, you will love the Coconut Peanut Butter bar. This is the sweetest of the three, and the coconut and peanut butter work together better than I anticipated. This was a surprise hit!

One thing I will mention about these bars is that can be a tad messy. The first time I tried the peanut butter flavored bar, the oils started to drip down my arm a bit in the car .. It was a hot day and I wasn’t paying enough attention. That doesn’t detract from the taste and it proves to me just how fresh they are, but I would recommend having a napkin nearby.

In addition to these bars mentioned above, there are many other flavors, as well as the other snacks I already mentioned. I’d love to let my kiddos try the Kids bars, as it’s the best way to get them to eat kale, carrots, and sweet potatoes when they think they are eating a candy bar. The bites also sound like delicious options when I’m running short on time, which is often. And the Peanut Butter Cups sound sinfully delicious. I think I’d probably save those for a dessert option. The only bad thing I have to say in this review is that I didn’t get to try those .. Guess it’s off to the refrigerator section of the grocery store for those.
