The Shotgun Trail Blast put on by Level 32 Racing is sure to be a fun one especially for those looking for an early spring 50K Ultra Marathon this year. For those of us not looking to put in so many miles there will be 5K, 10K, and 25K distances as well! The race takes place at Shotgun Creek Recreation Area just outside of Marcola, OR.
The course for the 5K is a nice fast loop while the 10K has an out and back section for half a mile before the 5.2 mile loop that is repeated on the 25K course 3 times and 6 times for the 50K. The elevation gain for each 5.2 mile loop is 566 ft which means 1,698 ft for the 25K and 3,396 ft for the 50K. All courses have great scenery through the woods with views of streams and wildlife. Due to the minimal (depending on who you’re talking to) elevation gain, this could be a great first ultra for those wanting to exceed the 26.2 miles of your regular marathon. If this is your first foray into trail running, the Shotgun Creek area is very scenic and relatively close to anybody living in the I-5 corridor that is interested in participating!
Aid stations are everywhere which is a huge plus for this race for any distance you are running. 5K (1.8 mi, 2.8 mi), 10K (2.9 mi, 3.9 mi), 25K (2mi, 2.9mi, 5.2mi, 7.2mi, 8.1mi, 10.4mi, 12.4mi, 13.3mi), 50K (2mi, 2.9mi, 5.2mi, 7.2mi, 8.1mi, 10.4mi, 12.4mi, 13.3mi, 15.6mi, 17.6mi, 18.5mi, 20.8mi, 22.8mi, 23.7mi, 26mi, 28mi, 28.9mi).
Overall, this is a well stocked, fun, and challenging race that would do well to be on your calendar. With the varying amounts of distances, this can also find it’s way on your training calendar to test your fitness and have a little something for everyone!
