Race Preview: 2019 Heart Breaker Half, 10k, & 5k Run/Walk

Last year, I was looking for a race that I could do myself that also had a great kid’s race for my sons to participate in. A lot of races that have options for the kiddos don’t work out time-wise if I want to run first, but the Heart Breaker Half, 10k, & 5k Run/Walk was perfect. Turns out it’s a really fun race with an awesome course and great swag too.

This year, the 2019 Heart Breaker Half, 10k, & 5k Run/Walk is on February 17th and it’s definitely worth considering. The Half starts at 8:00AM with the 10k and 5k staggering in 10 minute increments after. The Kids’ Dash is at 10:30, which leaves enough time for the adults to join the kiddos depending on how fast you are.

Last year, I not only loved the design of the race shirt and finisher’s medal, but the kids received cute “heartbreaker” shirts that they still wear regularly and medals identical to the adult ones. This was a huge selling point for me, as my kids always love my race medals and this way they could earn some of their very own.

The course for this race would certainly not be considered an easy one, though it is a pretty route which travels over some rolling country roads. The Half is 3 loops long and 1 of those loops is run twice. After a bit of climbing, participants will reach the section of the course that is called “Heart Break Hill” where they will be timed as though it’s a separate race within itself. The fastest man and woman to get over Heart Break Hill will receive a special prize. After cresting this hill, the course will mostly flatten out with just a few more rolling hills before you reach the stadium at the finish. The 10k is a single loop only and the Heart Break Loop is not a part of it. The milage is slightly longer than an official 10k at 6.32 miles total. The 5k course is a flat and fast one through a business park. The Kids’ Dash will likely occur mostly around the perimeter of the Liberty High School track if it’s anything like last year’s course. Read the course information here, and be on the look out for the 2019 course map coming soon.

This race, in the middle of American Heart Month, is part of the Providence Heart to Start program and you can even train for the race with Team Providence for free. Check out the program here.

Come out and join the fun!!
