Trailblazing Through Nature’s Canvas: A Review of the Buck Mountain Mudslinger Trail Run

Run Wild Adventures is best known for their staple race – the Silver Falls Marathon and Half Marathon (50K, 5k, and seven miler), set amidst the stunning landscapes of Silver Falls State Park. But tucked within this natural wonderland lies another gem: the Buck Mountain Mudslinger Trail Run. Having participated in this event multiple times, I can attest to its charm and the passion with which Run Wild Adventures orchestrates its races.

The Buck Mountain Mudslinger Trail Run, now in its 14th year, offers participants a captivating journey through the non-waterfalls portion of Silver Falls State Park, showcasing various trails and providing a manageable yet exhilarating course spanning approximately 6.8 miles. This year’s event, held on February 24, 2024, unfolded against a picturesque backdrop of blue skies, and gentle sunshine, setting the stage for an unforgettable race day experience.

The race course, predominantly composed of single-track trails with occasional wider stretches, presents an ideal terrain for trail running enthusiasts. There were some nice climbs – near mile 1, 2, and a longer but mellower climb for about a mile from 3-4, but each were followed by pretty immediate downhills. None of the uphills are too terrible and I feel it offers a well-balanced challenge. Obviously trail conditions vary year by year, influenced by the whims of nature.

I have run this event a handful of times – one in super mucky mud, once in calf high snow, and this year by the grace of mother nature – about the most perfect trail conditions you can get. Regardless of when you run this event (who’s to know what future years will hold), the allure of the surrounding scenery compensated for any trail challenges encountered along the way.

Following the exhilarating run, participants were treated to lively post-run festivities, where Run Wild Adventures showcased their local flair with music, raffles, snacks, coffee, and beer from Ratchet Brewery. These festivities not only fostered a sense of camaraderie among participants but also underscored the organizers’ commitment to providing a memorable race experience beyond the trails.

As Run Wild Adventures gradually reduces its race footprint, I wholeheartedly encourage avid runners to support their two flagship events: the Buck Mountain Mudslinger Trail Run and the Silver Falls Marathon.

Mark your calendars for the next edition in 2025, and be sure to set your alarms for August 1st to secure your spot in the upcoming November Silver Falls event. With its scenic beauty, challenging courses, and vibrant post-race celebrations, Run Wild Adventures offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the splendor of Oregon’s wilderness while pursuing the thrill of trail running.
