In my opinion, September is the best month for a race. The weather starts to cool down, the air feels good, and the gloomy winter months haven’t arrived yet. This is the perfect time to consider the 2019 Lake of the Woods Tri/Sport Weekend, which occurs on September 7th and 8th.
There are many events to choose from occurring on Saturday, September 7th, including road bike courses, stand up paddleboard races, and Tri/Du/Relay options. Sunday September 8th will be the day for the runners, as there’s a half marathon, a full mountain marathon, and a 5k Poker Run that day. (You can check out all the weekend events here.)
The race is small, as only 62 half marathon and 5k finishers (combined!) finished the course last year. It’s sure to be a gorgeous experience, as the lake views of the Cascades (just over 4,900 feet above sea level,) will not disappoint. You’ll also be near the 9,499 ft high volcanic peak (often covered in snow and ice) of Mount McLoughlin, which is north of Mount Shasta and south of Crater Lake. The course, which can be viewed here, follows an out-and-back route west of the lake. Runners will enjoy single-track trails and some paved, gravel, and dirt terrain.
Camping will be available as well, and since the race weekend boasts the “BEST Kid’s Triathlon anywhere,” you could certainly plan a family affair. This weekend event is located in Klamath Falls, OR and all of the events start near the Lake of the Woods Marina, just off Falls Highway.
