What Run Oregon is Wearing: RYU Vapor Long Sleeve and Interval Short

Fellow Run Oregon blogger Nikki Mueller already wrote about running apparel from RYU (Respect Your Universe), but I too got to test some of the Canadian company’s athletic clothing, and like Nikki, I’ve become a big fan, especially of the Vapor Long Sleeve top.
This is a long sleeve tech shirt suitable as a baselayer in colder weather or as the main layer in mild/cool weather. When I first opened the package and unfolded the shirt, I thought it looked like it might be a little short, but once I put it on, it was perfect in size – dropping inches below the beltline. (I’m 5’10” and tested a size Medium.) Moisture wicking tech shirts often have a waxy feel to them, which I don’t mind, but if I don’t know better, I would’ve thought that the Vapor Long Sleeve was made of high quality cotton.
I’ve tested this shirt on multiple occasions. It was a fine as a casual top, but it really shone as a running shirt. I’ve tested it in cold, drizzly weather where I had it on underneath a racing shell; in cool, sunny weather; and in cool, overcast weather. The great thing about the Vapor Long Sleeve is that I felt consistently comfortable throughout the runs, even as I warmed up during a run itself. RYU manufactured this shirt with “airflow zones,” and they worked as advertised.
Because all of my testing runs occurred in late winter/early spring weather, I wasn’t able to evaluate the moisture wicking ability of the shirt (but Nikki said it was very effective for her).
The Vapor Long Sleeve has quickly become one of my favorite all purpose shirts. The only thing I won’t use it for is running an actual race, but only because I don’t want to poke holes in it for the racing bib!

This is a pair of running shorts with an inner lining (i.e., no need for underwear). The ends of the inner lining have compression effect on the mid-thighs, which keeps the lining from riding up the leg. As was the case with the top, I didn’t have a chance to evaluate the moisture wicking ability of the shorts. In all other respects, though, these are comfortable, performance shorts. And if you’re like me and prefer true side pockets in shorts, as opposed to those little bags along the inside of the waistline, you’ll like these shorts – although note that the pockets are a little shallow. During one run, I had a smartphone in the pocket and it actually bounced out of the pocket and clattered on the ground, so the pockets are probably more suited to keys, ID, etc.
Summary
You know how there are those particular running clothes that, for whatever reason, just hit a perfect note and become the favorites that you rush to take out of the clean laundry pile so you can wear them right away? The Vapor Long Sleeve is in that tier for me. (I don’t seem to have favorite shorts of any label; it’s just a shirt thing for me.) I like wearing it for running, except then I have to take it off to wash; whereas if I save it for casual wear, I can get a whole day out of it….
