Clean Like a Man: Mavericks Skin Care (15% off through 12/15/17!)

UntitledAt the ripe old age of 33, I have started to become an “adult” over the past few years, upgrading my wardrobe, hair style, and my hygiene game. I don’t commit too much time to it (a full-time job, 3 young kids, a blog to manage, AND a running hobby have me always on the move), but it is nice to have something at the ready that really does the trick Over the past few weeks, I have been trying out the skin care and shaving line from Mavericks – a relatively new start-up that launched in 2016 on Amazon Launchpad. They were also featured by GQ and BusinessInsider.

To me, one problem with many men’s skincare lines is sometimes too hard to make something “manly”. I personally don’t have many issues with most men grooming scents, but I’m not sure that all men need (or want) to smell like pine tar, sandalwood, or any other number of rugged outdoorsy smells. I don’t generally mind these, but sometimes a man just wants to smell clean. I was very impressed with the way that Mavericks went about their smells. I found them straight-forward, simplistic, understated. My wife isn’t a huge fan when I come to bed smelling like a lumberjack, so this approach works well for me.

In an effort to provide the full review experience, I have been trying out Maverick’s full Face Kit cleaning cycle, which consists of:

  1. In the morning, rinse face with warm water, pat dry then apply PROTECT. – SPF 30 barrier to keep your face protected and hydrated all day

  2. At night, WASH away the day’s build-up and pat face dry. – Minty cleanser that leaves your face fresh and smooth (not dry)

  3. Immediately apply REBUILD to supercharge your overnight recovery. – Vitamin A powers cellular regeneration while you sleep.

You can definitely read through all the details on Mavericks pages about the good that each of these do, but I’ll be shorter and sweeter. Essentially, each morning I use Protect, which is a combo moisturizer (hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring product, retains 100x its weight in water) and SPF 30 to protect from the day ahead. This may seem like a no-brainer in summer, but I do know that UVA rays occur even when it’s cloudy. Protection knows no season!

Each night before bed, I clean my face with Wash to clean the gunk from the day away. I don’t know about you, but my face can actually feel worn down after a day of work, running, and overall stress and exhaustion. Wash is made from organic peppermint and spearmint oils (naturally anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory), but doesn’t overpower you with mint when doing so.

Finally, I finish the day with Rebuild, which use green and white tea polyphenols to keep your skin healthy with their natural antioxidant powers. It is also full of vitamin A, which shows to be regenerate collagen and keep the skin firm instead of falling into wrinkles and lines. I, for one, am not super scared of my wrinkle-filled future, but even at 33, I am starting to notice my face going more in that direction. I may as well naturally hold off the aging process as long as I can.

I am also a BIG fan of Maverick’s Shave. It’s relatively pricy for a tube ($25), but a little goes a long way and lasts much longer, with less waste, than the variety of mass-produced gels and creams I run through each month. Instead of making you look like Santa Claus, Mavericks has created the world’s first 3-in-1 moisturizer / shaving cream / aftershave. It goes on thin and even on the face, without a huge lather, and doesn’t really look like it should work as well as it does. It surpassed all my expectations. I legitimately felt that I got a closer shave, and even the think layer left my face soft and supple with no razor burn at all. I’m a convert now.

Finally, Maverick’s also sent a tube of their “Buff “, a face scrub made from crushed up bamboo extract, as well as “amaranth, willow bark, bisabolol, licorice and grapefruit to nourish your exposed skin”. It gives the feeling of little beads on your skin, in an effort to be thorough in its cleaning capabilities. While I like this, I find that sometimes that can be a little too rough on my face. I have had no such issues with this product, and it can be used by those with oilier skin as an everyday scrub. However, if you are prone to dry skin, I would recommend a few times per week.

Overall, I was surprisingly happy with each item reviewed. Their committment to natural ingredients and the ability to have something man-centric, without going overboard, was very impressive. However, it’s clear that this is an investment and is something that you should expect to pay more than mass-produced counterparts. But you can feel good with your face game.

Thank you to Mavericks for providing us with samples. Please read our transparency page for info on how we do our reviews.
