It’s hard to believe that the Fourth of July is less than a month away!
The Freedomthon is a fun local event for our nation’s birthday, and one that I’ve run nearly every year it’s been in existence. It’s a fast 5K race, a pancake and sausage breakfast, pie-eating contest(!), and playground for kids with fun activities, all in one. Last year, there was a dunk tank with Run Oregon blogger Brian Bernier as one of the designated dunkees, a free zumba lesson, and more. (Here’s my recap of last year’s race and post-race festivities.)
There are also two race events for kids (although kids are, of course, welcome in the 5K). There’s a timed 1 mile race, and an untimed 1/4 mile kidathon. And, of course, there’s the other race, the one to finish eating a pie – no hands, naturally.

Last year’s pie-eating contestants!
The 5K race course is flat and straight. It’s kind of weird to me that I haven’t PR’d on this course, actually, but perhaps this will be the year.
If you haven’t run this race before, yes, race volunteers will hand you a small U.S. flag near the end of the course to carry with you to the finish line.
