My 5 year old daughters dream race: A preview of the 2015 Run Your Tutu Off 5k

My daughter is a cheerleader. She competes competitively and has started to travel (mostly to Portland) to participate in the sport she loves. What this means for me is a lot of pink, a lot of sassiness, and a lot of tutu’s. I manage OK with this, but a race like the 2015 Run Your Tutu Off 5k, held on February 21 in Corvallis – we can combine our two loves and bond like many races wouldn’t allow us to!

The race is put on by local star Fitness by Emily. I recommend reading her story here, as it’s one that mirrors many individuals – runners or not – and their desire to become healthy. She puts on a Beginner’s Walk/Run Clinic for Beginners in addition to this race. The clinic teaches the basics of running and supports people who may just be starting up and making some running goals. We all started somewhere, right?!

The event is in its 3rd year and is timed but designed to be fun, yet still allow for all age groups and skill levels to enjoy their time together. My 5-year-old and I will be cruising around Crystal Lake Park in our tutu’s – yes I am sure that she will convince me to dress accordingly, and I’m OK with that! Crystal Lake Park is a large park nestled along the Willamette River and a little south of Highway 34 (the main road that jets over from I-5). Dogs and strollers are welcome as well.

In 2014, 79 participants showed up (even in 29 degree temperatures. I am hopeful that it will continue to grow. The race supports Furniture Share in Benton County and their Beds for Kids Program. The Beds for Kids program:

“…is for children sleeping on the floor or in inadequate sleeping arrangements, has continuously been on the rise. In order for Furniture Share to help these children get a good nights sleep, we are asking for your help. With our community members’ help, together we can provide a child in need with the rest they require! $40 provides a child in need with their own bed, pillow, sheets and blankets!”

In 2014, the event raised over $500 and I know that the running community can help raise even more this year. We should all broaden our horizons and small races such as these, where money stays in the local community, and goes to a great cause, are really fantastic. Sign up today!
