Even when we are showcasing new-to-us companies in the outdoors sphere, it’s always amazes us when we stumble upon those who have been in the game for such a long time but just out of radar – not by desire, but just hadn’t yet made a connection. One such company is Jack Wolfskin, a 40-year-old German brand known for high-performing apparel great for long days on the trail.
And while they have been doing this for a while, they are now just making their items available to the US. After receiving some running tops in 2021, we were recently sent a jacket to check out.

I was recently sent the Routeburn Pro Insulated Jacket an insulated jacket that is equal parts style, comfort, and construction. It is a little thicker weight – not ideal as a heavier running jacket, but perfect as a pre- and post-race warm up and perfect for Pacific Northwest winters (and beyond).
The Routeburn Pro is an extremely versatile outerwear option. It just fits in in whatever setting you are in and really checks all the boxes. It is stylish enough to wear for a night out this fall and winter, as well as on a cold weather hike. I mean, the “TEXASHIELD PRO” shell fabric is designed to withstand cold wind gusts and rain. Couple that with comfortable stretch fleece and PRIMALOFT recycled polyester insulation, you will have a freedom of motion AND protection from the elements that any outdoorsperson desires. In all instances, it does a fantastic job at keeping you warm and dry – no matter the activity.
The jacket also super plush and comfortable, so much so that I sometimes hate taking it off. In fact, as I’m writing this, it is 11:30am on a Tuesday indoors and I haven’t taken it off yet because I feel like I’m being casually hugged. It’s just a pleasure to wear.
As someone who typically wears a Large in most instances, I found that the sizing here pretty consistent. If you fall between two sizes, and are wanting a roomier fit to layer underneath, then go up. If you are looking for a more slimming profile, choose the lower one. I also really appreciate the length of the sleeves, something that individuals with longer arms (myself included) struggle to find. There are standard pockets (1 chest, 2 hip) and the hem is adjustable to get the desired fit.
Overall, you really can’t go wrong with a classic black look (though there are four other colorways) as we start to head into the fall. I don’t know about you, but staying indoors all winter is not good for the mind or body – and having the Routeburn Pro Insulated Jacket is destined to be one great way to stay active.
