Race for a Cause at the 2022 Girlfriends Run For the Cure (Vancouver)

The Girlfriends Run for a Cure is back and each year it just keeps getting better. Previously named the Girlfriends Half Marathon, this Vancouver event has raised a lot of money to fight breast cancer. It started to honor Joleen Skarberg, a breast cancer survivor and has evolved into must-do event for ladies in the surrounding Portland area. Girlfriends Run for a Cure is an all-time favorite event. I like that it’s all women, that there are all shapes and sizes out there having a good time and every fitness level is encouraged to come out. Some ladies run the course, some walk the course, but everyone is out there genuinely enjoying girl time.

The race will be held on Sunday, October 9th at 695 Waterfront Way in Vancouver. Ladies can choose from a 6k, a 10k, or a Half Marathon and kids 12 and under can race the 6k for free!! The run starts at 9:00AM and there’s usually a fun group warm-up to get everyone ready and in the spirit.  All participants receive a women’s (gender specific) technical shirt, finisher’s medal and post-race food and festivities. There is even a pampering station where you’ll be treated to a massage, a chiropractic treatment, or a stretching session.

While this is a run for ladies, there will be some guys along the course. A limited number of men run as the Pink Brigade for the Girlfriends Run for a Cure and they have to raise some serious money to earn that spot. They are impossible to miss along the course, usually donning a tutu, wig or something funky that makes them stand out.

The course itself is pretty and, best of all, flat. Participants get an up close view of the Farmer’s Market, Columbia River and Fort Vancouver. There’s something to look at the entire 13.1 miles and plenty of aid stations along the way.

The Why Racing Snack Shack will be waiting at the finish line for you with warm tomato soup, grilled cheese, fruit, cookies, and more. As mentioned, a pampering station is also available because all women deserve some self-care.

The cost of this event is $85 for the half marathon, $70 for the 10k, and $55 for the 5k. There is a reduced rate for youth 17 and under. You can also choose to raise or donate $500 in a fundraising capacity as a Pink Brigade Guy, a Glam Gal, or Warrior Woman or Man. Race fees increase on race day and at packet pick up, so register today instead!!

Come lace up to help women with breast cancer and bring a group of friends to run together or come out and make some new ones. This event is truly special and I think every woman needs to run/walk it at least once. Make sure to look for Bib #1, and give Joleen Skarberg a special shout out, since she’s the reason this event started in the first place.
