The View is Nice from Up Here: First Look at the On Cloudvista

It’s On!! If you haven’t heard of On yet, you will. I’m seeing these running shoes everywhere now – at my gym, at races, at running events. And the reason for this is that they are receiving good buzz and they offer something truly different than any other running shoe.

I recently had a chance to test out the new Cloudvista, and they did not disappoint. They showed up in the White/Rust color combination and I got them a half size larger than my typical shoe as suggested.

Before I get too ahead of myself, let me mention how the Cloudvista compares to other styles of On running shoes. These were, as described by the website’s stats, meant more for trail than road, and most appropriate for medium distances. The cushioning is moderate. In other words, this is a very standard middle-of-the road trail shoe.

As soon as I slipped them on, I could feel the difference between these and any of my other running shoes (which is quite a varied collection, I might add.) The first thing I noticed was that they don’t feel as cushioned as many other shoes, but that’s not a bad thing by any means. Many runners prefer less bounce on their ride, and these do not feel as heavy as many other shoes would. Not surprisingly, the Cloudvista is one of the lightest shoes in On’s trail collection.

The sole of the On shoes is not like any other, in my opinion. The “teeth” of the tread is pretty pronounced, so I feel like the gripabiity (is that even a word? If not, it should be,) is excellent for getting up and down on rocks and on trails. This is likely due to the Missiongrip™ material. You feel close to the ground in these and therefore able to “hug” the corners of all terrains. And that lightweight feel is likely due to the Helion™ superfoam with CloudTec® material, which is not heavy like some trail shoes.

The shoes have more than 70% recycled polyester and come equipped with a TPU mudguard. The Cloudvista would be great for hand-packed trails and forested flatter routes.  I’m looking forward to spending a summer out in Forest Park in these.
