Run Oregon Test Kitchen: shār trail mix

How often are you able to sit down and really enjoy a snack in a day? Or even in a week? If your life is anything like mine, you are on the go a lot, and finding time to eat is challenging. You don’t have a good snack at the ready and the next thing you know, you’re overeating at dinner because you haven’t had enough during the day to carry you through. Sound at all familiar? If so, keep reading.

shār takes care of the problem described above and then some. They make trail mix that is not only satisfying and delicious, but it’s healthy and ethical as well. Their products are all 100% organic, they produce their snacks in small, hand-crafted batches in Austin, TX, and everything is responsibly sourced. The ingredients are  100% organic, vegan, paleo, gluten–free, and non–gmo. They try their best to leave the smallest possible footprint on this earth and 20% of their net profits are donated to The Conservation Alliance. Even their packaging is plastic-free.

All that is well and good, but let’s be 100% truthful here .. If the product itself weren’t good, it wouldn’t really matter how ethical a company was. No one wants to eat a trail mix that tastes like bird food. No worries. The shār original trail mix is some of the best I’ve had that’s not homemade. It might as well be. It contains almonds, pecans, cashews, pistachios, blueberries, Montmorency cherries, cranberries, coconut flakes, and some of the most awesome dark chocolate pieces ever.

In my experience, some trail mix is just junk food in disguise and the ones that are toted as “healthy” aren’t terribly flavorful. The shār trail mix are neither of these things. Not only is it dangerously yummy and fresh, it keeps me feeling satiated through the mid-afternoon when I’m typically yearning for food. It fits easily in a purse or a bag too.

There are several buying options for the shār trail mix. You can buy a 3.7 oz package for $7.99 or you could buy a 3 pack for $21.50. There are also smaller 1.5 oz grab-n-go packages (3 pack for $10.79 or a 5 pack for $17.55) as well as bulk options (a 1 lb bag for $28.99 or a 2.5 lb bag for $69.99.) You can also buy a one-time purchase or set it up like a subscription service so you can have it delivered on your schedule for 10% off the normal price.

Give it a go! It’s good for the earth and it’s good for your body. And delish!!

More about shār:

healthy, delicious, and ethical. in a snack? impossible, right? back in 2013, we figured the only way to check all those boxes was to make it ourselves.

we spent the next three years tracking down incredible ingredients, the right ones (nine as it turned out), travelling, tasting, weighing and mixing (in a wooden bowl on the kitchen tablet to start with) to land on the perfect calibration of taste, texture, nutrition.

it had to be ethical too.

so all our ingredients are 100% organic, small-batch and responsibly–sourced (more of that later, find out about leo our cranberry guy and other inspiring farmers), we run with as light a footprint as possible and a promise to the conservation alliance.

Thank you to shār for providing us with a sample pack. Please read our transparency page for info on how we do our reviews.
