Race Preview: 2019 Rip City Race for the Roses (Portland)

Rip City Race for the Roses holds a very special place in my runner’s heart because it’s the event that after a year of encouragement, support, and a few bribes, I talked my mother into completing with me. It was her very first 5K race. And after crossing the finish line and putting on her medal, she declared it to be her last. She was going to retire on a high note. She had completed the best and would be cheering for me at the finish line next time.

I am still so proud of my mom for completing that race, and agree with her that she picked a great one for her adventure. Rip City Race for the Roses begins and ends at Rose Quarter Commons, in an open area between Veterans Memorial Coliseum and Moda Center. So there is lots of gathering space beforehand to stretch and work out any morning jitters. The half marathon, 10K, and 5K routes overlap one another and all use Broadway Bridge to get into downtown Portland for part of their out-and-back-routes (longer distances travel farther into NW and Front Avenue before returning).

Back over the bridge and into the Rose Quarter, every participant receives a t-shirt, finisher medal, and celebratory mimosa. Plus, because the event is connected to the Blazers and Rose Quarter events, there will be opportunities for participants to purchase some special deals on tickets for upcoming events.

This spring event is happening rain or shine (or snow, based on our wild 2019 so far) and benefits Albertina Kerr. 100% of race proceeds goes towards needs in our local community. Albertina Kerr “empowers people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, and other social barriers to lead self-determined lives and reach their full potential.” What a perfect organization for runners and walkers to support. Every step you take on the course is toward reaching your potential, and supporting someone else to reach theirs. Definitely warms a runner’s heart. <3
