Run Oregon Test Kitchen: Trail Butter

Do you remember the first time you got to eat a chocolate chip cookie, fresh out of the oven? You might not be able to recall that far back, but I am sure we can agree that your taste buds did a little happy dance. This happens to be the same happy dance my taste buds did upon trying Trail Butter for the first time.

If you haven’t heard of these guys yet, who happen to have started in Portland, let me give you the skinny…their mission is “to create delicious, all-natural energy food alternatives that provide balanced, slow-burning energy in a convenient portable package, all while using only unprocessed, whole-food ingredients. Since Day 1, we’ve operated under the mantra, “BE TRAIL READY”

Since receiving 1 of each pouch to try, I have discovered where to get them locally and have been keeping my fuel pantry stocked. Cranberries & Sunflower is currently my fave. I typically enjoy a pouch during and after my long runs and have learned to carry it while I am running because one of the product suggestions is to “knead” the pouch in order to get the butter to blend with the other ingredients in the pouch. This way you get everything in your mouth instead of just the butter. The pouches say they are 4 servings per container but admittedly they are single serving pouches for me. Trail Butter does make a single serving option in the Maple Syrup & Sea Salt flavor that is a lot like taking a gel pack with you on your run. Regardless of which one you choose, you will not be disappointed!!

Flavors:

  • Cranberries & Sunflower
  • Maple Syrup & Sea Salt
  • Dark Chocolate and Coffee

Where to buy: From the Trail Butter website or on Amazon. Also check out their Store Locator for local options.

Costs:

  • Pouches:
    • 3 pack = $17.99
    • 6 pack = $33.99
    • 12 pack = $64.49

I’m with you on this! A 4 oz pouch of any of the 3 flavors (I love them all) is just the right amount to fuel my long runs.
