Run Oregon Test Kitchen: The Right Cup

As someone who is physically very active, I should be drinking a lot of water to keep myself hydrated. I’ve fallen off the “water drinking band wagon” ever since my favorite water bottle broke and I was looking for some new motivation to get back to chugging water again. The flavor of plain, old water is not always my favorite, so when I heard about The Right Cup, I was very intrigued. The concept of this product seemed too good to be true. The Right Cup is described as “the fruit flavored cup that tricks the brain into thinking your plain water is flavored.”

What the what? That’s what I said. But it really just comes down to basic science. The sensation of flavor is the combination of smell, taste, and sight. As you drink from this cup, your nose will pick up the fruity scent of the rim of the cup. Your tongue will get a slight sweet taste. And finally, the color of the cup, (mine was orange,) will also trick you into thinking you are drinking something that would be that color, (so an orange drink in my case.) All of these should lead your brain to believe you are drinking something other than water, but that’s exactly what you are having! The result? No preservatives, no sugar, no calories.. just water!!

The Right cup comes in six different flavors: Peach, Apple, Cola, Berries, Grapes, and Orange. Each colorful plastic tumbler cup is 11 oz big and is BPA, Phthalate and PVC Free. They are FDC and EU compliant for use in food and beverage packaging and use applications. When you open the box for the first time, the cup is in a sealed pouch so that the flavor is ready when you are. When you initially open the package, the smell is pretty strong. You should consider rinsing it out first if you’d like the experience to be less intense, and you are supposed to store it upside down to preserve it as long as possible. You won’t want to put this through the dishwasher or microwave, and you’ll want to avoid extreme heat and cold, as it will affect the properties of the cup and it won’t last as long. Other than that, it’s pretty easy. Pour water in and drink like any other cup.

I can see how this cup would be beneficial to parents with kids who don’t like drinking their water. Fruit juices are loaded with sugar and most of us could benefit from more water in our lives. The cola flavored cup could also be worth a try for those with soda addictions – just use sparkling water instead of tap water. I had my kindergartener try my orange-flavored glass. I asked him what it tasted like and he said “It tastes like nothing. But it’s good!” That’s a good review for a 5 year old.

So what did I think of this cup? It tasted more flavorful than water. I think, as with any review, my opinion is subjective and there have been reviews all over the map on this one. The thing that discourages me is that the cup is on the small size and not very portable if you wanted to take it outside of the home. The cup will also eventually lose it’s magic, though that depends how long or often you use it. Still, I think this is a great idea. There is definitely something to The Right Cup and I would love to try other flavors. If you need the extra motivation to increase your water, I can think of worse ways to do so. And it doesn’t get much simpler than this, so why not? My son is already stealing the cup from me, so that’s a good sign.
