Small Race Previews: 2017 Lakad for Lumad 5k & Miles for Matale 5k

If you are looking for a scenic 5k in NE Portland on September 23rd  that the whole family can participate in, the Lakad for Lumad 5k Run/Walk might be a great option for you. After the race, there will be a fun after-party at Columbia Park with live music and food from Flipino vendors.

The Lakad for Luman 5k race raises funds for the Lumad, which is an indigenous community of the Philippines. You will not only get a great race, but will also be funding the building of water systems and schools for the Lumad on the islands of Mindanao through the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns.

All participants who register before Sept 1st will get a free t-shirt with features the Lakad for Lumad logo. If you register with a group of 7 or more, everyone gets a $5 discount. Teams are encourages to all wear similar shirts, costumes, or to follow a theme.

A local artist is crafting custom-made finishing medals for the top 3 males and females plus a medal for the first place non-binary runner.

If the race above isn’t in your neighborhood but you are still looking to do a race for a good cause, you also have the option of Beaverton’s Miles For Matale 5k, which is also on September 23rd.

Southridge High School’s IB Diploma Candidates are raising money for their sister school in Matale, Uganda so they can buy some new computers for St. Andrew’s. The goal is to raise $5000 and all of the proceeds from this race will fund this technology. This event is entirely student and volunteer-run and will not be formally timed.

Children under 12 years old can run free and there will be booths set up near the start line celebrating African culture. There will be music, clothes, food and more.

When:  September 23rd, 10:00AM (9:45AM is the Kids Fun Run)
