Race Preview: 2017 Grapes of Half (Eugene)

The 5th annual Grapes of Half Marathon, presented by Pink Buffalo Racing, is back again on Sunday, May 21, 2017  in Eugene’s gorgeous wine country. It has even been ted in the top 10 wine-themed races in the US by Shape Magazine.

If you a wine club member at Sweet CheeksSilvan Ridge, or Noble Estate, you can check in with your club membership rep to receive a $5 off coupon code. Also, when registering, designate which winery you want to “represent”. The three wineries are competing in a challenge to bring out the most participants, and the fastest runners.

The course map showcases the gorgeous 13.1 mile, point-to-point course. Runners will start by heading out of Noble Estate winery, which will be a short bit of gravel. The remainder of the course will be on pavement. As you travel through the picturesque wine country, you will be treated to breathtaking views of vineyards, beautiful rural farm lands, and farm animals (my favorite), such as goats, sheep, pigs, hens, horses, deer, cows … maybe more. The course will have marshals staged to direct you, and, as all Pink Buffalo Races are, the course will be well-marked. The final push of your half marathon journey will be to climb the Silvan Ridge Winery hill, proceed back down, cross the street and proceed up the Sweet Cheeks Winery hill (which is quite an awesome accomplishment!).

The race will feature 5 aid stations along the course, with all stations stocked with water, Gatorade, energy gels, and first aid. Restrooms will be available at four of the five aid stations. The course limit is 4 hours, which equates to an average pace of 18:18 per mile. No dogs or strollers on the course. Drop bag service will be provided at the start and finish lines.

Upon crossing the finish line at the top of the hill at Sweet Cheeks, you will receive a finisher medal and beautiful, custom event wine glass. Participants 21+ will receive a wine ticket for a complimentary pour at each of the three wineries. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Chip timing will be provided by the awesome folks at Eclectic Edge Racing (which means you also get a print out of your results at the finish line). Post race refreshments, including gluten and dairy free options, will be available at the finish line.

Pre-race packet pick-up will be available at the Noble Estate Winery Urban, located at 560 Commercial Street in Eugene on Saturday, May 20, from 4-6 p.m. Race morning packet pick-up will occur at Noble Estate Winery (the start line) from 630-745a. Event quarter-zip shirts are available during registration for an additional $22
