Race Preview: 2017 Heart of the Valley Triathlon & Duathlon (Corvallis)

It’s Spring and my guess is you are ready for some adventures outside! If you are one of those talented athletes who likes to mix it up with some combination of running, biking, and swimming or maybe even all three, Corvallis has some options for you on April 30th with their Heart of the Valley Triathlon and Duathlon brought to you by Best In The West Events.  There are even some great choices for the kids, including a triathlon! Below you will find a little information about all of the events this beautiful Willamette Valley race day has to offer.

Duathlon: This event includes a 5k Run, an 11 mile bike ride, and another 5k run. The course for both of the runs will be the same and it’s a flat and fast two loop course which takes you on a tour of the neighborhoods of Central Corvallis. One aid station will be available with water, electrolytes, and gels. The bike course, a mile shorter than the typical sprint distance, offers challenging rolling hills. In fact, you will have a steady hill as soon as you take off, so be ready! The course is on the beautiful country roads on the outskirts of Corvallis.

Triathlon: This event includes a 750 meter swim, an 11 mile bike ride, and a 5k run. The bike ride and 5k run are the same as the ones described for the duathlon. For the swimming portion of the race, which is held at Osborn Aquatic Center, there are two options .. 7.5 laps around the indoor 50 meter pool or 15 laps around the heated outdoor 25 meter pool. You will be assigned to pools and lanes based on your 500 yard swim time, which is something you must provide when you register for the event (you can change it after you register as needed.) The swim will go in 5 second waves and there will be volunteer lap counters. A locker room will be made available to you.

Relay Teams: If you would like to team up for one of the events, you have the option of a two or three person relay. If you have a two person race, one person will do two parts of the race. After one portion of the race is completed by one team member, they will then tag another person on their team to complete the next event in the transition area. This tagging off must be done in the transition areas, and physical contact must be made. Teams can do any combination of legs, but each leg can only be completed by one team member. One person should register their whole team, but all team members will sign a waiver and check in separately. The person who registers the team will need to know all team members first and last names, email addresses, and shirt sizes/colors. Teammates will then receive an email to provide some additional information. One person will pay for the entire team. All team members will receive a shirt and a timing chip and all will wear a race number except the swimmer in the triathlon. Feel free to be creative and wear matching team outfits, create an awesome team name, and have fun!

Kid’s Races: There are lots of different options for kiddos of all ages! The bike and run portions will be lead by experienced volunteers, but parents and guardians are welcome to assist as well. Kids are divided into groups of 9 years & under and 10-15 years. Floaties and life jackets are welcome for the pool. The events for the kids are as follows:

  • Splash & Dash: Ages 4-12. 25 meter swim and a 250 meter run.
  • Kids Tri – Short Course: Ages 9 & under. 100 meter swim, 3k bike (one loop of the adult run course,) and a 1k run around the track in the school area, (younger kids do one loop.)
  • Kids Tri – Long Course: Ages 10-15. 200 meter swim, 5k bike (two loops of the adult run course,) 1.7k run around perimeter of track, (older kids do two loops before going to the finish line.)
