Riverfront Park in Salem will be the site for the Armed Forces Challenge 5K & Wellness Expo on Sunday, May 22nd. Created by the Health Promotion Office and the Service Member and Family Support division of the Oregon Army National Guard, in celebration of Military Spouse Appreciation Month, the event will benefit the Oregon National Guard Association Scholarship Fund.
The 5k run/walk will be chip timed, and is open to everyone. However, the race is free to current military personnel, active, reserve, and veterans, and results will be compiled by service branch for fastest overall and average times! How cool is that?
The course will take runners and walkers from Riverfront Park across the pedestrian bridge over the Willamette into Wallace Marine Park and back.
A non-competitive run/walk wave will take off 15 minutes after the competitive race starts with prizes for best military or patriotic costume, and there is also a Kids 1k Dash with participation medals for all finishers.
The accompanying Wellness Expo will feature local organizations offering information on exercise and nutrition, as well as volunteer, family, and veteran resources. If you’re not planning to run or walk, there will also be plenty of opportunities to volunteer.
