Coach Jim’s free marathon training for Saturday, January 30, 2016

Runners at the Banks trailhead at a previous Coach Jim run.

This weekend’s free spring marathon/half marathon training run is a 16-mile out-and-back on the Banks-Vernonia Trail. You may run the entire distance or turn back early, depending on your training schedule.

There are permanent restrooms at the trailhead and two porta-potties near mile 4, which is are usually in good condition and stocked with hand sanitizer.

This is not a supported run; bring your own nutrition and hydration.

The path is somewhat sheltered from wind, but if it rains (and it looks like it will) you’ll get wet. Prepare by bringing a set of warm clothes (including extra shoes) to change into when you’re done so you don’t get too cold. Bring a post-run snack too, as there aren’t many places to stop until you get back towards Portland.

This weekend’s group run details:

Where: Vernonia-Banks Trail, Banks Trailhead – use “NW Banks Rd and NW Sellers Rd” for directions. The trailhead is at that intersection, with a small parking lot, a large signboard, and a permanent restroom structure.

What time: The run starts at 8a, be there by 7:45a at the latest

Distance: 16 miles

We started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. We also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support local race organizers.
