Get Weird in the Woods at the Post Canyon Half Marathon

There are plenty of great trail races in Oregon, but few embrace the weird, wild, and downright fun side of trail running quite like the Post Canyon Half Marathon. Returning to Hood River on August 22, 2026, this grassroots event takes runners deep into the trails of Post Canyon for a challenging and memorable adventure.

Now entering its 12th year, the race takes place on the sprawling Hood River County Forestry Tree Farm above Hood River. The course starts and finishes at the Post Canyon-Binns Hill Staging Area and packs approximately 2,300 feet of elevation gain into its 13.1-mile route. Expect plenty of climbing, descending, twisting singletrack, and technical terrain as you work your way through the forests overlooking the Columbia Gorge. Depending on conditions and forestry operations, the exact course can change from year to year, adding an extra layer of mystery to race day.

The race begins at 7:00 a.m. and is designed for runners who enjoy a little unpredictability with their trail miles. Along the way you’ll find mountain views stretching across both Oregon and Washington, creek crossings, waterfalls, and the kind of rolling terrain that keeps you constantly engaged.

This is a cupless race, and all participants must carry at least 24 ounces of water, either in a bottle or hydration pack. Two official aid stations will be available on course, along with a handful of bonus stations featuring snacks, entertainment, and the sort of surprises that have become a hallmark of the event.

Speaking of surprises, Post Canyon has developed a reputation for being unlike any other race in the region. Volunteers and spectators often show up in costumes, runners may encounter unicorns, gorillas, or other unexpected characters in the woods, and there is even a puppy-petting popsicle station somewhere along the route. The vibe is less about chasing podium spots and more about having an unforgettable day on the trails.

Every finisher receives a prize bag loaded with products and swag from local businesses and sponsors, with organizers claiming the retail value exceeds the cost of registration. Random bonus prizes are also awarded throughout the event, ranging from small goodies to prizes valued at more than $100.

Packet pickup takes place race morning beginning at 6:00 a.m. at the start area. For runners traveling from outside Hood River, camping is available nearby at Kingsley Reservoir, located about 15 minutes from the course. The reservoir also makes for a great post-race cooldown after tackling all those hills.
