As we approach the final day of what’s often the coldest, darkest month of the year, I want to share a piece of advice that’s close to my heart.
New Year’s Eve often comes with grand expectations—epic parties, magical midnight kisses, and outfits that completely defy the weather. But let’s be honest: the hype rarely lives up to reality. While New Year’s Eve celebrations can be enjoyable, there’s no rule that says you have to rely on a single day to set your goals or transform your life.
Why not start now? Whether it’s today, next week, or some random Tuesday in April, the best time to make a change is when it feels right for you. Dream big, but don’t forget the small steps along the way. Maybe daily micro-goals, like a quick barre workout, staying hydrated, or tracking your mileage, are your thing. Or perhaps a seasonal goal—like easing into winter but planning to ramp up training on April 1—suits you better. And if you’re content with where you are, that’s great too. Sometimes, the best goal is to simply avoid adding unnecessary stress.
Ultimately, running is meant to be fun. For some, that’s sticking to a structured training plan and chasing PRs. For others, it’s the joy of running a relaxed 5K while chatting with a friend. If it’s not fun right now, switch things up. And don’t wait for a special occasion like New Year’s to try something new—spring’s promise of longer days and warmer weather is a perfect motivator.
There’s no right or wrong way to enjoy running (except with scissors—seriously, don’t do that).
