Sole-ful Reunion: Coming Back to Brooks with the Glycerin 21 GTS

I have always been a fan of Brooks gear. This is a company that specializes in running – period. Unlike many other companies that are jacks of all trades in sports gear, Brooks is ALL ABOUT running. They are runners and they get it.

However, my experience with wearing Brooks shoes has been somewhat intermittent over the years. I love checking out their seasonal collections and pride-inspired options, but that has mostly been it (though our other reviewers have reviewed – and loved – lots).

A few years ago, I checked out my first ever Glycerin shoe – the Stealthfit 20 – and it was a surprise hit for me. So, I was excited to try out the Glycerin GTS 21’s and see how some modifications have affected things.

Styles:

The Glycerin offers a diverse range of options within its own lineup. It is available in four different versions:

  • Standard
  • GTS
  • Stealthfit
  • GTS Stealthfit

Although our review focuses on the GTS version (Go-To-Support, utilizing Guiderails for additional support), it’s worth noting that there are strong similarities among all versions, with subtle variations.

Looks:

Extending beyond the different types of Glycerin’s, each version is available in a diverse array of colors covering the spectrum. Specifically, the GTS offers five colorways, the standard 21’s come in seven, and the Stealthfit has two. This results in a mishmash of options, ranging from classic blacks and whites to vibrant oranges and pinks.

The standard and GTS versions are pretty standard-looking shoes overall (nothing too flashy), and with such a broad range, there’s a color option to suit every runner’s preference.

Upper:

The knit upper not only looks great – it feels amazing too! It wraps around the foot in this comfy, thick way that’s just so nice. Seriously, it hugs your foot from the ankle down to under the tongue, and the toe box is happily roomy. Even with all this love, there’s enough space to let your toes spread out without feeling cramped. Super solid construction overall.

Now, about breathability – it seems pretty good thus far, but we’ve been checking these out in the chilly winter weather. The real test is gonna be when things heat up on the pavement. I’m thinking the knit’s plush vibe might make it a bit warm, but we’ll see how it holds up over time.

Midsole:

As mentioned earlier, my return to Brooks with the Glycerin 20’s was a positive experience. This optimism continues in the Glycerin 21’s, as they retain the DNA LOFT v3 midsole construction from the 20’s, albeit with an additional 2mm of it. The cushioning maintains a balance between firmness and springiness, but the extra DNA LOFT introduces a bit more cushioning, surprisingly without adding much weight. The 21’s seem to embody more of the max-cushion description that was somewhat lacking in the 20’s.

Personally, I appreciate a certain drop in my shoes, but a 10mm drop is quite significant. While I managed it well without any real issues, it could be quite noticeable for those accustomed to a lower drop. However, for heel strikers, this higher drop might be beneficial.

Outsole:

The outsole of the Glycerin 21 strikes a commendable balance between durability and flexibility. While I recall Brooks typically featuring a full rubber bottom, the placement in these appear more strategically executed than anticipated. Although there is ample coverage, the breaks in the outsole allow the midsole to perform admirably. The inclusion of the new RoadTack rubber ensures a solid grip, and when coupled with a wider base, it contributes to an overall enjoyable riding experience.

Overall:

2024 may be the year of Brooks. We are already a few reviews deep (with a handful more to come soon) this year and have been pretty surprised at how we have liked what Brooks is doing. Check them out and make your own return if you’ve been away for a while too.
