Although the word “ultra” can be a scary one for some runners, it is the ultimate challenge for others. Pushing beyond 26.2 miles to 50K, 50 miles, or 100 miles means much more than just a few more miles. It usually means additional challenges in terrain, elevation, and support.
Tillamook Burn Trail Run is a fantastic race to try if you are ready for the ultra challenge. This year the event is across 3 days with a 100 mile stage race option for participants who take on a race each day: 20 miles on Friday, 50 miles on Saturday, and 50K on Sunday. The rest of mere mortals can take on one of the days and just be amazed the other two.
All races use Reehers Camp as the finish line, with the 20-mile and 50K also using them as the start line. The 50-mile race is a point-to-point event with participants bused to the starting line with just one way to go for the finish, bonfire, and recovery beer. All events are filled with hills on generally soft dirt surface, with some technical sections with rocks and roots, as well as some long climbs and descents. All of the courses also pass through multiple shallow waterfalls so your feet will get wet.
Overflowing aid stations are placed along each course, with specific mileage and support details available online. Tillamook Burn, like most trail races and ultras, is a cupless event so be sure to carry a hydration pack or other option for refreshing and refueling. And then those amazing volunteers will provide you encouragement, guidance, and a high five to get you back on your way.
