Do you like super cute finisher medals? What about some excellent Ice Cream Sandwiches? How about a race that is incredibly well-managed? These are all “must have” items for me when I participate in races, and the Foot Traffic Flat is certain to be absolutely awesome.
This event, held on July 4th, 2022 for it’s 19th year on Sauvie Island, fills fast and has limited entries available. This means, if you are at all interested in racing, you must get registered right away – Like, today! I don’t want anyone to have the desire to participate, but find out even later this week that the Flat has sold out. Custom race bibs are still available until June 21st, assuming the event has not sold out by then.
I’m planning on racing in the half marathon, and I am exceptionally excited to participate in this event. Several of my friends do this race every year. This will be my second year participating, and honestly I’m not sure why I held out so long!

It should also be mentioned that though it’s often hot for this race in July, it’s also an exceptionally flat, ultra fast course. This is a Boston qualifier marathon course as well, so you can really GO for it!
Times
There is a shuttle option as there has been in the past, which will take you from NW Portland in front of the Silver Cloud Inn (2426 NW Vaugh St) to Suavie Island and back. Tickets are available at bib pick up, cash only, for $9.
In addition to the shuttle mentioned above, there will also be a shuttle to get the starting line of the Quarter Marathon, as this year this race distance is a point-to-point course. The cost of this shuttle is included in the registration fee.
There are two start times for the marathon, depending on your pace. If your pace is a 10-minute mile or over, plan on a 5:30AM start time and a 5.5 hour time limit. If you anticipate running under a 10-minute mile, you can chose the 6:15AM start time for the marathon. The Half and Quarter Marathon will start together in 5 waves ranging from 6:30AM to 6:50AM. The 5k will have 2 wave starts, one at 7:20AM and one at 7:20AM. This is awesome because 1) We will beat any potential heat for the 4th of July (it usually is a pretty nice day in the PNW on the Fourth!), and 2) We can get back home and enjoy the entire day for festivities with friends and family, knowing we got our run-on already!
Course
Check out the course maps for all the race distances on the website. Remember – ALL race distances are SUPER flat and fast. Make sure any spectators you have coming with you know that they can not drive around the island to cheer you on; only local island related traffic is allowed during the race. Instead, they can ride bicycles or hang out at the finish line and enjoy the incredible Pumpkin Patch! Love this place.
Post-Race
All finishers will receive a finisher medal! Awards will be presented to overall male and female finishers for each distance. Random prizes will be handed out as folks cross the finish line.
