Growing up in Washington State, apples were part of daily life. I lived in Yakima, an agricultural town that was scattered with different kinds of orchards and a centerpiece of the yearly fair was the apple-based mosaics on the Agricultural Building. Since my mom was a teacher, apples became a part our home’s decorations as well. And I think of apples before Grease when it comes to Pink Ladies.
All of this to say: Appletree Half Marathon: Here I come!
I am so excited that the PeaceHealth Appletree Marathon, Half, & 5K are back this September. Two years ago I completed the Sunset 5K and the Half Marathon to earn a Beast Medal. The Sunset 5K is a wonderful course that keeps you right where the action is and enjoying the end of a beautiful summer evening. It is the perfect distance to include your friends, or get out some nerves before the longer race the next morning.
The Half and Full Marathon courses use a slightly longer version of the 5K with more miles spent exploring the Vancouver community. The full marathon course is the half marathon loop twice, which helps spectators keep track of their runners and walkers, and helps participants watch for those essential aid stations (planned for every mile, WOW).
This “Run Through History” will take you on a flat, fast and scenic course through Fort Vancouver, Officer’s Row, the Army Barracks, Pearson Airport – the oldest operating airport in the USA, the Historical Old Apple Tree, along the majestic Columbia River and many other historical vantage points.
The beautiful course ends back at Fort Vancouver for a post-race meal and party. I scooted out quickly last time due to rain, but will be there for my burger, rain or shine. All participants earn a medal and lots of apple treats, including pie and cider. This 4th annual running should become part of your yearly running schedule. It definitely is part of mine.
