Race Preview: 2021 Huckleberry Half Marathon/15k/10k/5k

It’s summer race season and the 2021 Huckleberry Half Marathon is back on August 7th, along with the 15k, the 10k, and the 5k. There’s still a virtual option as well. Unfortunately, registration is no longer open for 2021, but this locally owned and operated race wants to keep participants safe by limiting the amount of runners on the course. If you deferred in 2020, email the race directors and they will make sure you are registered for this year.

The Huckleberry Half takes runners on a gorgeous journey throughout Mt Hood National Forest. The course is a challenging one, but there is a lot to see and there are plenty of aid stations. At the finish line, you’ll receive a finisher medal, some water, and some music to keep you pumped. There will be prizes and a cute t-shirt, plus photos with the Bigfoot mascot.

We can’t ignore that Covid-19 has changed some things, so here’s the scoop on the changes this year to the Huckleberry Half. There will be a “less full” start/finish area than in previous years, and a couple less aid stations. Due to financial ramifications, the medal could be a bit smaller and the prizes might be a little less than what they were previously. This race continues to strive to benefit the local community and nonprofits.

The Half Marathon starts at 6:45AM for walkers and at 7:30AM for the runners. The route will take you through a golf course, the Cascade Range, and the Salmon River. You also might spot a deer or two! The Half Marathon follows the same route as the 10k except the additional 6-7 miles through the National Forest and you’ll cross the Salmon River twice. There are lots of rolling hills.

The 10k starts at 8:30AM and participants will head south on Salmon River Rd and take Fairway Ave, checking out the Cascade Range as you go. On Welches Road, check out the woodsy homes and the beauty of nature.

The 5k will be the last race of the day to depart at 8:45AM, and takes you thru the fairways and into The Resort at the Mountain neighborhood and follows an out and back route. You can check out the course details and map here.

It might be too late to get this race on your calendar this year, but get it on the books for next year! You shouldn’t miss it!
