If a title could be claimed for the quintessential small town Oregon race, the Lincoln City Half Marathon and 10K would definitely be in the running (pun intended) for one of the best. Though it is held in a coastal town, it is run in a forested setting without views of the ocean. This is not a loss, as the majority of the course is in a quiet valley, with the section after the 10K turnaround on an idyllic gravel road bordering a creek. It is a great run for contemplation and fun, with the gradual downhill on the way back giving a chance for the legs to recuperate before the final climb and quick finish on the track. This year the date has been moved out a couple weeks from its normal place on the calendar, to April 4th.
I have personally run this race five or six times and it is definitely one of my favorites. They have all the amenities, including aid stations and great post race food. The track finish is always a bit of a kick in my book (yet another intended pun), and the regular cheering/aid stations on the course are two incentives to run well. The out and back course itself can be described as mildly hilly, with a drop near the start meaning there is a climb near the finish. The whole way out is spent mostly in a mild climb, which is a great incentive to run negative splits. It can be run as a fast or scenic race in either the half or 10K if you have been doing hill work through the winter.
Registration is currently open online, with the half priced at $55 and and the 10K at $45. This includes a shirt and finishers medal, which has featured cool designs in the past. Ribbons are awarded to the top finishers overall and in their respective age groups. The event is chip timed and starts at Taft High School. There is a pre race packet pick up option at the Lincoln City Community Center from noon to 5 on April the 3rd. Pre race packet pick up is from 7-8:30 at the High School, with the races starting at 9.
I can’t recommend this race enough and hope to be toeing the line in the half marathon on April 4th. This won’t be my fastest race of the year (I hope), but it will definitely be one of the most fun. This is a great event to push the limits or just enjoy the scenery. They do an amazing job on all counts at this race, every year I have attended. It is worth the trip to come out and run, utilize the free showers at the high school, and make a day of it at the coast.
