Race Preview: 2019 Best in the West Triathlon (Sweet Home)

It’s time for the 2019 Best in the West Triathlon! This year’s events take place the weekend of Friday September 6th thru Sunday September 8th. In addition to the bike events on Friday and the Half-Iron, Olympic and Kids Splash and Dash Saturday, there’s a Half Marathon and 10k Saturday and a 5k, Sprint, Super-Sprint, and Mixed Team Relay on Sunday. Whether you want to do a Tri, a Du, an aqua bike race, or a run, there really is something for everyone. There’s even a Beer Mile Relay on Saturday! You can view the whole schedule of events here.

This event weekend will be in Sweet Home by the Santiam River and Foster Reservoir. The location, in the foothills of the Cascades, will ensure it’s a scenic and ideal location for this festival weekend.

The High Noon 10k starts at 12:00PM on Saturday. There’s 396 feet of elevation gain and it’s a 1 loop “T” shaped course. There will be 8 aid station stops and runners will be permitted on course until 4:00PM. You can see the course here.

The High Noon Half Marathon will also start at 12:00PM on Saturday. There’s 800 feet of elevation and it’s a 2 loop “T” shaped course. You can view that here. Runners should plan to be finished by 4:00PM, though you can request an early start if you think you’ll take longer than 4 hours.

The 5k out and back race will be on Sunday at 8:25AM. There is 260 feet of elevation gain with 4 aid station stops. The cut off is 1:00PM for this event. Check it out here.

In all cases, the finish line will stay up until every runner has crossed it. All of the courses feature rolling hills and there will be a lot of shade. The terrain is paved roads with some hard packed dirt near the start and finish lines. The aid stations will have bathrooms available plus all the typical aid station fare such as water, gels, electrolytes, some cold towels, and basic first aid.

There is also a Beer Mile Relay on Saturday around 7:00PM. This event is ideally for 4 team members, though you could run it solo if you chose to. There are 4 legs of a ¼ mile each and team members will chugging 12 oz of their favorite brew (or milk, pop, or carbonated water/juice if you want a non-alchoholic option) before each leg.  BYOB, and no puking allowed!! You don’t need to register for this event, so just come and have some fun!

There’s a great post race party as well! There’s a HUGE BBQ with lots of delicious food and beer, not to mention live music. Stay for the party because you’ve earned it! There’s a campground available as well if you’d like to make a weekend of it, and you could bring your family for the experience as well.

Swag goodies for the race include a race t-shirt (your choice of ring-spun cotton or wicking tech material,) and a finisher bandana. Tri participants will also receive swag bags and a swim cap. Everyone will get finishers medals, a post race BBQ, and 2 drink tickets.
