The second annual Roses on the River 5k run takes place this year on Saturday, August 17th at Waterfront Park in downtown Portland. The race celebrates and teams up with the Portland Thorns FC women’s soccer team, and all participants of the race receive a free ticket to the Portland Thorns v. Washington Spirit game on the evening of the event.
The course starts on Naito and Main St, just south of the Salmon Street Fountain. Runners and walkers first head north on Naito Pkwy for one mile to the Steel Bridge. The southbound second mile runs along the water on the Waterfront Park Trail. Finally, the third mile is a loop, first south on SW Harbor Drive, then circling to the east and heading north on South Waterfront Trail to the finish line at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park.
To allow runners and walkers of a wide range of paces and to create the best possible racing environment for all, the event has nine starting waves based on expected race pace. Two waves of walkers kick off the morning at 8:30 and 8:45. The Elite Runners’ wave (with race pace of 7min/mile or better) starts at 9:45, when most of the walkers will have already finished their 5k. The next six waves of runners get started every 5-10 minutes. For details about the race schedule, please refer to the event website.
