Running for a cause is one of the most meaningful ways this sport can benefit a community and how we can use our passion to help people. The Race for the Homeless, is in its 20th year and donates 100% of the proceeds from the race to Open House Ministries.
Open House Ministries has been aiding families without homes by providing shelter and and life skills training since 1986. Yet, this organization is so much more than a shelter. Families that are a part of the Open House community get personalized case management and also commits themselves to the program to gain ownership in the resolution of their own homelessness situation. Since the shelter program is independently funded, they are able to continue their support even after a family leaves the shelter, hoping to transition families into independence slowly and thus more successfully.
New Heights Church uses this event to add to their community. Last year the race raised over $9000 to benefit the homeless in Clark County. This church is passionate about giving. In addition to helping the homeless, this congregation is passionate about providing support groups for those struggling with mental illness, provide scholarships for children to attend summer camps, and to help give medical aid to those in need.
There are so many ways to help support these organizations in their efforts to support homeless families in southern Washington. A great start, is to run this race to raise awareness and funding for their cause. Your help does not need to end after the 3.1 (or 6.3), please visit their websites for more information on other ways to continue to support their causes.
