Run Oregon Test Kitchen: A blast from the past with Smart Tarts High Protein Toaster Pastries

My parents were never exactly health nuts, but they refused to buy a lot of the high sugar breakfast cereals that my friends got to eat. So as you can imagine, things like Pop Tarts were off the table of options unless I was lucky enough to have a sleepover at a friend’s house. Now, as a parent, I find myself saying no to the same things my parents did, but luckily we have more options available now too. The Smart Co has developed a toaster pastry you can eat without so much guilt.

Smart Tarts High Protein Toaster Pastries are available in three different flavors and they have 4x more protein and 50% less sugar than the typical toaster pastry. They also have less net carbs and are filled with jams from real fruit. They are all natural with no high-fructose corn syrup.

The thing that appeals to me as a mom is that these are a great portable option. Whether I’m giving one to my kid as we head out the door or I’m grabbing one for myself between clients, it couldn’t be easier. You can heat them up or eat them right out of the package and they are delicious either way.

So how do they taste? Well, if you like the “other” toaster pastries, you’ll like these. You have the flavor options of blueberry acai, strawberry chia, or my personal favorite, cinnamon twist. These are more like the “classic” tarts of my youth .. no frosting on top or weird flavors.. just a soft baked outer crust and yummy filling on the inside that won’t leave you feeling like you have a cavity when you’re done. They are about the same size as a typical toaster pastry, though there is only one pastry in a package as opposed to two. Frankly, I like that option better because I don’t usually want to eat two at once and I don’t like opening a package and leaving it exposed for another day.

Each flavor comes in a box of 12 pastries, but if you aren’t sure which to order, you can always get a sampler package of all three flavors. Your first order will ship free if you use the code “FREESHIP” when you check out.  If you want to rebel against your childhood like I did, give them a try.
