Race Preview: 2019 Starlight Run (Portland)

The Starlight Run has a special place in my heart because it was my very first race as a runner. Last year I got to run alongside my friend Yevette for her first race. With a course that follows part of the Starlight Parade route, this race in the heart of downtown Portland is perfect for your first race (or in my case a yearly race tradition).

This year will be the 41st anniversary of the Starlight Run. Along with that milestone are some brand new details. The start / finish line is moving to Waterfront Park, with all participants receiving free entry to CityFair. Your race bib is your ticket! All runners and walkers will also receive (for the first time) a medal after finishing.

Along with the new are the classic details of this race. The Starlight Run is focused on fun. While there is a timer at the finish line, participants are not chip-timed. Instead they are encouraged to enjoy being the event before the parade. There will literally be hundreds of kids on the course wanting to give you a high five. Slow down and make their day. This race also includes a costume contest, with awards for adult, child, individual, and group. Even if you decide not to enter the contest, still show up in style for those 250,000 adoring fans on the course.

This is a June event, so weather can be warm. There are no water stations on the course; bring along your own water bottle for hydration. There will be water at the finish line party.

Hope to see on you Saturday, June 1st for “Portland’s Party in the Streets!”
