Small Race Previews: 2019 Focus on Hope (Roseburg) and Rhody Run (Florence)

This is a preview of a couple of smaller races. First up is the Focus on Hope in Roseburg, Oregon, followed by the Rhody Run in Port Townsend, Washington.

The Focus on Hope 5K/1 mile race is the Roseburg Community Cancer Center’s “annual cancer awareness and cancer risk management education and fundraising event,” with all of the proceeds staying in the local community:

In the past decade the Community Cancer Center has treated thousands of patients and waived over 2 million dollars in treatment services. Our Focus on Hope goes beyond treatment in many ways:

  • Last year the Community Cancer Center provided over 450 face-to-face hours delivering our awareness and healthy lifestyle messages to our patients and the Douglas county residents.
  • We engaged more than 25,000 community members through our programs and awareness campaigns
  • And, currently promote more than 25 community outreach programs, events or resources that aid cancer patients during treatment, cancer survivors and community members.
  • Most importantly, over the past decade, we have provided more than $3,125,000.00 in services to individuals in need.

There is a 5K race and a 1 mile race available at this event, which takes place on May 18. Each costs $20; a race shirt can be ordered during registration for an additional $20.

The Rhody Run is a 5K and 10K race in Florence, Oregon, also on May 18, 2019, at 9 am. (In fact, there is another race called the Rhody Run taking place on May 18, 2019, in Port Townsend, Washington. If you’re looking for that one, here’s the link.) The race organizer, Eclectic Edge Racing, has provided the course maps for both distances (5K and 10K) — it looks like both distances are out-and-backs that follow the curve of the Siuslaw River, and both are USATF certified.

At just $20 for pre-registered runners, this is a budget-friendly race. (And just $15 for teens under 18, and $10 for kids!) There is a race shirt available for purchase for $15.
