It’s cold outside, so that must mean it’s time to do the 2019 Beaver Freezer Triathlon & Duathalon! This year, the event at the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis will be on Saturday April 6th.
The Beaver Freezer started in 1993 and has been a huge fundraiser for the OSU Triathlon Club for over 20 years. In 2010, the Beaver Freezer became the largest triathlon with an indoor swim in the US. It’s a great event for beginning triathletes and seasoned veterans alike. All abilities are welcome at this race and there’s something for everyone. Age groups range anywhere from the minimum age requirement of 16 years to 60+ years and there are road and mountain bike categories and even a relay option. If you don’t want to do the triathlon, there’s an option for a duathlon as well. It’s also super easy for spectators to cheer you on from the campus, so invite the family to encourage you along the way!
The sprint triathlon starts with a 500 yard swim in one of two pools on the OSU campus. There will be 10 heats starting promptly at 8:00AM for each pool. The last heat will start around 10:35AM. The Dixon Parking lot at the campus will be used as a transition area after the swimming portion, and a 12 mile bike ride through the college district and country roads will follow. There are a few gentle hills on the ride, and then lastly, there’s a 3.1 mile run consisting of 3 loops around the campus which finishes at the Memorial Union Quad. If you choose to do the dualthon instead, you can avoid getting wet and just do the bike ride and run. More details about the course can be found here.
This race fills within hours of registration, so be advised. If you’ve missed your chance to participate already, there are a few other options for you. There’s a waiting list you can get on if you email your name and the race you’d like to register for to beaverfreezer@gmal.com. Another option is that you could wait and try for the Beaver Fever Triathlon & Duathlon in October. The third option is that you could volunteer for the race to get priority (ie EARLY) registration for next year.
The cost of the triathlon is $62 for individuals and $94 for a 2 person team. A 3 person team is $129. There is no late registration or day of registration since this race sells out so fast. The cost for the duathlon is $57 for individuals and $89 for a 2 person team. If there’s availability after March 1st, the cost goes up to $62 for individuals and $94 for a 2 person team. Day of registration, (again, if not already full,) is $67 for individuals and $100 for a 2 person team.
There will also be shirts available for purchase. Get a tech t-shirt for only $10 or a long sleeved tech shirt for $20. There are three color options for you: Black, orange, or pink. Shirt orders will only be accepted until 3/1/19.
