Who likes getting dirty? The 2019 ORRC Hagg Lake Mud Runs in Gaston, OR are coming on February 16th and 17th and you’ll have a few different options. The 50k will be on Saturday, the 25k will be Sunday, and as always you could choose to tackle both events for the “double” if you’re up to the challenge. However, you have even more choices this year, as 40 spots have been opened for an additional 25k (actually a tad longer at 17 miles) on Saturday, which will travel around the lake in the traditional counterclockwise direction. This means you could do the “baby double” which would be a 25k both Saturday and Sunday.
This race, which has been featured in Runner’s World Trail Edition as a top Oregon trail race, will not disappoint. Both distances will start at Boat Ramp C and run around the beautiful Hagg Lake. The 50k course starts with 3 miles out-and-back on a gravel road with your biggest elevation change of the race. After this little warm-up back to the start, runners can shed some layers and get out on the trails where the fun (and mud) really begins! The route will be run counterclockwise twice around the single track trail around the lake. There will be 5 aid stations. The 25k course begins with a loop through the Boat Ramp parking lot before hitting the trail for a little bit as well as a mile traveling out and back on a gravel road. Once runners get back to the start, they will again, as with the 50k on Saturday, have a chance to drop some clothes off before they hit the mud and run around Hagg Lake but in a clockwise direction. There will be 2 aid stations. The additional 25k that’s been added this year for Saturday is the first loop of the 50k route with the 50k runners. This means the route will actually be around 17 miles long and you’ll do a full counterclockwise loop.
Each aid station will be fully stocked with PB&J, fruit, gummy bears, trail mix, chips, and GU. The race is cupless, (one of many efforts the race makes to eventually meet the goal of becoming a zero-waste event) so PLEASE plan to carry your own hydration device. There will also be porta-potties at the aid stations and basic first aid supplies. There will not be any painkillers.
There is no early start option this year and there is a 9 hour time limit for the 50k. Any runner who is not through the start/finish area after the first loop of the 50k by noon will not be allowed to run their second loop. There are cutoffs at the dam aid station (1:15PM) and the Fenders Blue aid station (3:00PM) as well. This is a 17:10 minute/mile average pace.
The cost for this race is $96 for the 50k and $76 for the 25k. Those doing both will pay only $122 and the two 25k races will be $112. The single 25k option for Saturday is SOLD OUT. Parking passes are included in your registration fee and if you are an ORRC member, you’ll save $10 per race. There’s an optional shirt you can order for this race, and the deadline for shirt orders is January 14th. There are long sleeved ¼ zip tech shirts as well as short sleeved tech shirts available, but there will be a limited supply on race day. Those that tackle the “baby” double will earn a “baby” growler (32 oz) and the “double” runners will earn a full growler full of beer, cider, or root beer.
There’s a training run out at Hagg Lake on January 5th if you’re interested in getting a preview of what Hagg is all about. Check out the Facebook event for more info on that. There is also a Trail Work Party at 9:00AM on January 26 if you like to come pitch in and get to know Hagg Lake.
After the race, you can pick up some free finisher socks and your finisher bag and you can change into some dry clean clothes in the heated changing area. Each runner will be treated to a post-race meal including grilled cheese sandwiches and hot homemade soup, as well as chips, desserts, and cold and hot drinks. There will be vegetarian options available upon request as well, so please ask and you shall receive!! Grab a celebratory beer while you’re at it. There will be a raffle, awards, and the pavilion will have space heaters.
I’ll be running the 25k myself this year, and I can’t wait. Come join the fun!!
