Small Race Preview: 2018 Moon Tree Run (Cave Junction)

Photo from Siskiyou Smokejumper Base Museum

Southern Oregon’s Cave Junction is home to one of the oldest standing smokejumper bases in the world. The Siskiyou Smokejumper Base Museum is the starting location for the annual Moon Tree Run. This event is a 5K and 10K that commemorates former smokejumper Stuart Roosa’s trip to the moon on Apollo 14. On this trip, tree seeds were taken to the moon and then returned to earth and planted. They are now known as the Moon Trees.

Both race courses cover most of the area that Roosa and other smokejumpers used for their PT (physical training.) The 10K is a mix of road and trail, while the 5K is mostly trail. This event is a celebration of the community of Cave Junction and its history. All proceeds from this race go to support the non-profit, volunteer run Siskiyou Smokejumpers Museum.
