We are lucky in Oregon, where there are many local running clubs from Ashland to Portland and everywhere in between. We’re also lucky in that there are people out there who put on free group runs, help with races, and support youth and other cause running and racing programs. The fine pacers that support Coach Jim’s Long Runs through the winter months are some of these people.
This weekend, the runners of Coach Jim’s group will head out to log a combined 17 miles, divided into two loops. The run will start at 8a from Grand Central Bakery at 714 N. Fremont Street. Please park on the street and remember to bring warm clothes to change into after the run. It’s also an option, since the run is comprised of two loops, to change shirts mid-way through and keep yourself a little warmer for a bit.
The first, an 8-mile loop, will run on Fremont from Grand Central Bakery all the way to NE 57th Ave, before taking a stair-step route past Grant Park back to NE 7th, where it will head back north to return on Fremont.
The second is an out-and-back that runs on N. Vancouver up to N. Ainsworth and then over to N. Willamette and in front of the University of Portland.
You can RSVP for this weekend’s run on facebook here – it helps them plan if you include your marathon goal time. This is an extremely friendly group and welcomes all runners. It doesn’t matter if you’re training for your first marathon or have run 50. It doesn’t matter if you’re actually even training for a marathon or just want to do a long run with others! They would love to have you and get to know you.
