Race Preview: 2018 Sweet Home’s Sweetheart Run

Go ahead, wear your heart on your sleeve this February and register for the 4th annual Sweet Home Sweetheart Run. This chip-timed 5k and 10K supports the Parks and Rec Department programs in Sweet Home.

The Sweet Home Recreation and Parks Department provides over 9,000 Sweet Home residents and visitors with essential opportunities to maintain healthy, active lifestyles. We maintain more than 7 neighborhood parks and playgrounds, and over 87 acres of recreational and open spaces. All of these green spaces and facilities add immensely to the quality of life of all Sweet Home residents and visitors.

We also host numerous free summer outdoor activities for Sweet Home’s youth.  Free summer outdoor activities allow youth that may not be otherwise exposed to the wonders of nature to enjoy all the fun that the great outdoors can provide.

We are dedicated to maintaining and improving these resources and activities, but we need your help.  Each year we are faced with limited funding that affects our ability to provide the essential programs Sweet Home residents and visitors rely on. Please enjoy participating in the Sweetheart race and known that your race contributions make a difference in the Sweet Home community. Thank you for support!

The 5K and 10K start at the Weddle Bridge in Sankey Park. There will also be a free 1 mile kids fun run for kids 10 and under before the timed events start. There will be finisher medals for all race participants and age group awards, as well.

Matt and Geli both ran this back in 2016, and here are some highlights:

The course, while not featuring really many major inclines, did have some variance – both in hills and terrain – along the way. [W]e climbed up to South Hills Trail, a beautiful rock and dirt trail that is shaded by canopied trees and feels like you have escaped to another world. [D]irections were extremely simple and easy. Arrows let us know we were always on the right track and a handful of volunteer guided runners in the right direction while directing traffic and the a few key intersections.

Overall, this was a very nicely organized small-town event. I have put on a race with around 100 participants myself, so I know the work that goes into it, and the City of Sweet Home organizers went well beyond what’s expected for a race of this size. I can definitely recommend the Sweetheart Run to anybody who’s looking for a race in the area.

Please note that no dogs are allowed on the race course due to safety reasons.
