Small Race Preview: Free Flight Run – 10K, 5K and Kid’s Mile Run (Newport)

Do you want to run the oldest continuous race held in Lincoln County? The Free Flight Run, named after migrating brown pelicans flying along the beach at this time of year, is put on by the Coast Hills Running Club, and offers a 10K, 5K and Kids mile race options. All proceeds from the race go to  support Newport middle school and high school runners.

The Kid’s Mile run starts things off and then it’s on to the 5k/10k races. The courses are billed as “flat and fast” on packed sand and offer scenic views of Yaquina Head Lighthouse and the headlands of Otter Rock. You’ll even probably see a few of those pelicans flying around! There will be one aid station within the 5K. 10K runners will run right back to the same aid station on the out and back.

Post-race snacks and drinks will be provided. Awards are given for top Overall Male and Female in the 5K and 10K, top Masters Male and Female in the 5K and 10K, and age group awards in 5 year increments. All Kids Mile participants receive a finisher ribbon, but there are no overall or age group awards.
