Small Race Previews: 2017 Reed College 5K FUNd Run/Walk for Neighborhood Schools (Portland) & Mountainside High School Community 5K (Beaverton)

Reed College 5K FUNd Run/Walk

The Reed College 5K FUNd Run starts and finishes on campus.

The annual Reed College 5K FUNd Run/Walk is set for Saturday, September 16th, and features a nice, somewhat hilly course that circles much of the college on mostly residential sidewalks before finishing with a nice tour of campus paths. The event is Reed’s way of welcoming the surrounding community while raising funds for local public elementary schools. All of the registration and sponsorship proceeds are donated directly to Duniway, Grout, Lewis, Llewellyn, and Woodstock elementary schools.

The Reed College 5K FUNd Run is open to all ages!

This year’s course is new, with runners making a mostly clockwise loop and spending more time on campus than in previous years. It also looks to be slightly (but only slightly) less hilly! Besides the quiet campus setting, another great feature of this event is the post-race pancake breakfast. Stay for the syrup and awards!

Note: The age groups are a little unconventional 😉

“Prizes will be awarded for male & female divisions:

7 and under
8-12
13-16
17-49
50+”

But where else can tenured professors compete directly with teenagers?

Last year’s race raised over $40,000, enough to help more than 2,000 students. The course, setting, organization, and beneficiaries make the Reed College 5K FUNd Run a tradition worth attending.

First Annual Mountainside Mavericks 5K Run/Walk

The brand new Mountainside High School is off to a great start with their Mavericks logo!

Mountainside High School is a brand new school just off Scholls Ferry Road in the Cooper Mountain area of Beaverton. On September 23rd Mountainside will welcome the community with a 5K Run/Walk that will serve as a friendly introduction to the school as well as a fundraiser for the nascent Mountainside Mavericks activities and athletic programs.

The new Mountainside HS welcomes the community with a 5K run/walk on September 23rd.

The course will show off the new school grounds, campus, and athletic fields, and after the 5K, students and staff will offer guided tours of the interior of the new buildings. There will also be a Lil’ Mavericks kids’ run on the football field. Vendors will have food and drinks for sale, and all participants will receive a T-shirt.

This sounds like a great opportunity to check out Beaverton’s newest high school and run an inaugural event before the “new school smell” wears off!
