Race Preview: 2017 Heel2Heal Freedom Calling 5K COLOR RUN (Tigard)

Races that give to specific causes are Run Oregon’s favorite races. There are numerous races across the country that raise funds to support cancer research, aid school programs, and benefit groups in need. The Freedom Calling Heel2Heal 5K Color Run raises awareness AND funds for a very worthy cause: child sex trafficking. While it may be an uncomfortable and scary topic to discuss, it’s critically necessary.

In the United States alone, over 100,000 children become child slaves each year, forced into prostitution. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Portland, Oregon is a national hub for child sex trafficking. Whats more, the Washington Times stated in an article from July 2010, that “State police in Oregon encounter three to five sex trafficking victims a week”. Portland’s legal commercial sex industry is the biggest per capita in the country, according to a report by researchers at Willamette Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic. Portland has more strip clubs per capita, than Las Vegas. While these facts make one’s stomach turn and heart turn heavy, there is a way to help combat and prevent teens and children who are at risk for becoming exploited.

Freedom Calling, an organization that is based in Portland, has put together a 5K fun run which raises funds for it’s programs for educational groups and families as well as providing trauma counseling to victims and their families. While the subject is serious and sobering, the fun run will be anything but! Grab your friends and family members, don a white shirt and prepared to laugh your way to the finish line while being showered with colored chalk.
