Race Preview: 2017 Monkey Face Half Marathon & 4 Mile

Have you ever heard of the “Monkey Face” at Smith Rock State Park? It’s a 350 ft high rock pillar which is also known as one of the world’s toughest rock climbs. It looks like, you guessed it, a giant monkey face. You’ll get to see this as well as Eastern Oregon’s high desert and more if you come out to Terrebonne for the Monkey Face Half Marathon, Half Marathon Relay, and 4 Mile event on August 19th.

This event is taking place the same weekend of the eclipse, but the race organizers are doing their best to help out with regards to lodging, so find the Monkey Face Facebook Page and let them know what accommodations you are seeking and they will do their best to help you out. Pink Buffalo Racing is also planning to arrange for shuttles for runners from an offsite location.

Speaking of shuttles, they will be available from 5:00AM-8:00AM and 9:00AM-12:00PM on race day so that participants can be transported between a nearby parking lot and the start/finish line of the race. Carpooling is strongly encouraged since parking will be limited. Spectators should be prepared to pay $5 for a parking pass at Smith Rock State Park and it must be cash, as this is all the parking pass machine will accept.

The race is an out-and-back course entirely on trails winding around the Crooked River and through the park which is well known for having some of Central Oregon’s best rock climbing terrain available. This race, which will feature truly scenic views, will also include a lot of challenging hills. Runners will climb more than 900 feet in elevation by the time they reach the 2nd mile marker.

The shirt deadline for a quarter zip embroidered shirt has passed but there will be a few shirts for sale for $22 at packet pick-up at FootZone in Bend if you’d still like one. First come, first serve!

There is a 4 hour time limit for the half marathon and relay. The 4 mile race doesn’t have a time limit but all finishers need to be done by 11:00AM.

A complimentary post-race beer from Deschutes Brewery will be waiting for racers 21 & over once you complete the race. Half marathons will receive a custom event medal. There will be no ceremony but there will be awards for the top 3 males and females overall and in each age group in the half marathon & 4 mile races.

Come check out the monkey face for yourself!
