Run Oregon Test Kitchen: ProYo High Protein Frozen Yogurt

Healthy ice cream? Where do I sign up? ProYo is a high-protein probiotic yogurt that claims to be a “revolutionary high-protein blend that combines delicious taste, powerful nutrition, clean ingredients, and a touch of delight.” It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta taste it, so why not someone with a sweet tooth like me?

I sometimes begrudgingly admit to being an athlete because it sounds so much more “bad ass” than I would proclaim myself to be. But I work out and run a lot in any given week, and I have come to understand that nutrition is the foundation to being successful in said athletic endeavors. The problem is, I love food .. And not all food that’s good for me. ProYo was developed by an athlete who was looking for better nutritionally-balanced food options following a bad weightlifting accident that came with a long road of painful rehab. ProYo is loaded with 20 grams of protein and is meant to be a healthy “anytime frozen treat” ideal for every age at any time. So whether you are looking for a pre or post-workout boost, a late-night treat, or a snack on the go, ProYo is a great choice for any of these situations. It’s not only high in protein, but it’s low in fat, a good source of fiber, non-GMO with no artificial ingredients, rBST & rBGH free, low glycemic, and is gluten & soy free. I was eager to see if it actually tasted good too.

ProYo offers two different product options. The first is low-fat ice cream, which is available in vanilla bean, dutch chocolate, mint chip, coconut, mocha, dark chocolate toffee, and blueberry pomegranate. The second option is squeezable smoothie tubes (there are 3 in a box) which come in dutch chocolate, vanilla bean, banana vanilla, and blueberry pomegranate.

Unfortunately, ProYo is not sold at all grocery stores yet. I used the website’s store locator and found that the Market of Choice in West Linn, about 10 miles from my house, was the only location that came up in the results. The ice cream, which just hit the shelves in March, was not available at the store yet, which was disappointing, but I plan to check back so I can give it a try. Three of the four flavors of the smoothie tubes were there, so I will have to try the banana vanilla later also. However, there is an option on the website to order all the products online. You’ll have to order in bulk (24, 36, and 48 count for the smoothie tubes or 6, 8, or 12 count packages of the pints of ice cream) but you can customize the variety packs to include whichever flavors you like and shipping is free.

What’s really nice about the ProYo smoothie tubes is that they are a very convenient “grab and go” option that you can just stick in the freezer and pull out whenever you have a hankering. You can eat one as is or throw it in a blender with your favorite liquid and some fruit to get an instant smoothie. Also, you can give these to your kids and feel better about the fact that they are getting something a bit more nutritious than another sweet treat. The smoothie tubes are relatively low in calories (140 to 150,) and the ingredient list is not too scary.

So the real question is how does it taste? I tried the dutch chocolate flavor after a run. It was pretty good, though the texture is different from that of ice cream. I think chocolate is especially hard to mimic if you’re going for a healthier option than the usual rich, decadent (ie fattening) stuff. But it didn’t taste bad at all. The next day, I tried the vanilla bean flavor after a workout and I liked it even better than the chocolate. A couple of days later, I blended a blueberry pomegranate tube into a smoothie along with some strawberries and a banana. My kids shared that with me and they loved it. I found it very flavorful. I would not mind keeping these around in my freezer for a quick fix for my sweets cravings after dinner. We also drink a lot of smoothies at my house, and these fit the bill there too.

There are also recipes on the website as well as articles with a focus on getting and staying healthy. This company is trying to make it easy for all of us to stay on the nutrition wagon, which is not an easy task. And what a yummy way to do so! I suggest you give these a try the next time you find yourself at the West Linn Market of Choice.
