Race Preview: 2017 Peninsula Poverty Response Cape D Triathlon & Duathlon (Ilwaco, WA)

The small town of Ilwaco sits just across the Washington border on the Long Beach Peninsula . It’s only about a half hour from Astoria (closer to Portland than Newport is), and the whole area fits in perfectly with any number of Oregon’s beautiful oceanfront towns. That whole area probably has more in common with Oregon and the Oregon Coast then it does with Washington. Despite all of that, I am guessing that most of us don’t really think of the Long Beach Peninsula as a destination to run, explore or hang out. I know I haven’t…until recently. The  Peninsula Poverty Response Cape D Triathlon & Duathlon (Facebook event page here) has actually been around for 5 years now, and we want to highlight it for the first time in Run Oregon’s existence.

The event is put on with a partnership with Ilwaco Parks and Recreation and SALT Hotel and really does great things for this rural Washington area. The PPR puts on events to assist and advocate those who need them most. The put on events like Project Homeless Connect and Overnight Winter Lodging to help out their communities, in addition to “providing resources to people living in poverty year round, provide poverty trainings to the community and partner with local agencies to maximize wrap around support”. It’s truly a worthwhile cause, even before the event.

The course will wind you around Black Lake Trails, Cape Disappointment Loop, cranberry bogs, the Port of Ilwaco, as well as views and overlooks of the mighty Pacific. Click here for the Duathlon course, as well as the individual bike and run courses. Weather will not stop the event, so come prepared!

If you do end up registering (or just want to see what the Long Peninsula is all about this year), we recommend checking availability at the SALT Hotel. They will be hosting the awards ceremony with food and refreshments after the triathlon. The hotel and pub were recently purchased by new owners and the property was refurbished to be brought up to modern standards. While they have been putting on surf camps, they are starting to shift some of their focus to stuff in our realm – cycling and running. There are so many great running trails just out the back door of the hotel, and their pub has gotten a kick in the pants towards awesome, with local food and brews!
