Race Preview: 2017 Hot Springs Trail Run

Put away those mountain bikes and grab your trail running shoes and a towel, for this race location is one of the top mountain biking and running trails in America. The Hot Springs Trail Run is on the McKenzie River Trail for 16+ miles, complete with a warm finish at the Belknap Hot Springs Lodge and Garden for you to relax before and after you run either 18 or 5 miles. This beautiful, mostly gradual downhill, trail hugs the flowing McKenzie River along with several gorgeous waterfalls starting from the Carmen Reservoir (for the 18 miler) or 5 miles from the finish (for the shorter distance).

There are some rules to be aware off – specifically a cut-off time and trail etiquette. The cut-off for the 18 miler is 5 hours (16:40 per mile) and 2 hours (24 minutes per mile) for the 5 miler. For someone as slow as me (which is slower than a turtle running through peanut butter), I wouldn’t worry on this course as that is plenty of time for most – but just be conscious of it.

The race directors of Pink Buffalo Racing (and me) want to keep the trail as pretty and clean as possible, so please no throwing empty gel packs or any wrappers. Also it is important to know that if If you are passing someone, please call out, “On your left!” before you pass. The trail is open to regular day users, so please make sure you are respectful of their experience.

For both distances you will need to take the race provided shuttle from the finish at the Belknap Hot Springs Lodge & Gardens before the race start. Participants will choose their shuttle departure time upon registering. There will be post race refreshments for you at the finish complimentary to the racers in the dining area. 18 mile finishers receive finisher medallions and age group medallions are awarded to the top 3 in each age group for both the 18 mile and 5 mile.

Also if you’re looking to get a carb friendly dinner the night before the race then look no further than the lodge. They will be hosting a spaghetti dinner for everyone for only $16 (you can reserve this dinner ahead of time by mailing a check to Pink Buffalo by April 10th). You can also add dinner to your registration online. Packet pickup occurs on Friday April 14th from 5 pm – 7 pm and on Saturday starting at 7 am.

This race will have chip timing done by Eclectic Edge Racing.

Shirts will be for sale and available online for preorder for $22.
