Race Preview: 2017 Vortex Half Marathon and 10K Trail Run

Did you know that Vortex was the only state sponsored rock festival in US history? This historic event took place in 1970 right here in Oregon at Estacada’s McIver State Park! Commemorate the event by donning your best 70’s garb and running the 3rd Annual Vortex Half Marathon and 10K Trail Run at McIver Park. This race is hosted by Run Wild Adventures and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

Enjoy scenic views of the Clackamas River and the beauty of nature around the park on single track trails. Expect muddy terrain and some challenging elevation changes along the course. The Half Marathon includes about 1500 feet of climbing, while the 10K has a total elevation gain of about 600 feet. There are aid stations along the route with both water and electrolytes. The half marathon course includes 3 stations at 3 mile intervals.
Run Oregon’s Matt Rassmussen ran the Vortex Half Marathon last year and had this to say in his recap of the event:

I don’t even know where to start when it comes to running in Run Wild Adventures races – they are all just so well done. The Vortex Half completed my lifelong accumulation of participating in all RWA events – and they just continue to get better. From the simplicity of pre-race (pick-up, bag drop) through the after-party – they just seem to have it down. It’s motivating and fun, merging a small-race comradery with big-race excitement. Over the 13 miles of criss-crossing and distant loops, the trails were marked so amazingly well, I feel it would have been impossible to veer off track. Flour markings and flags were strategically and perfectly placed and aid stations were well-spaced.

The top 3 overall male and female runners will receive unique, handmade awards, along with the top 3 in each age division. There will also be prizes for the best 70’s costume. Enjoy food, music, a beer garden, and raffle prizes after the race, as well.

Carpooling for this event is encouraged and camping is available at the park  – by advanced reservation. Gather your friends, pull out your 70s costumes, and plan to commemorate history with this scenic trail run.
