Growing up in Germany, I’ve had probably more Wurst than your average American. Married to a pun loving American, I have also hear my fair share of Wurst/worst comments. Mount Angel, Oregon, a small community with German roots, takes the pun and runs with it by organizing the yearly Wurst 5k and 10k Run on Saturday, February, 25th, in conjunction with the town’s Mount Angel Wurstfest.
The races start and end at Mount Angel’s Festhalle. The 5k course weaves through the streets of Mt Angel, mostly on sidewalks and paved paths, and finishes with a half mile downhill back to the Festhalle. The 10k course does much less weaving, but instead includes a hilly loop around the Abbey before also finishing with a nice downhill stretch. The course limit for the 10k is 90 minutes.
The very reasonably priced registration includes the chip timed race, a bier Stein, and free entry to the Wurst Fest after the run. Participants over 21 years of age will be able to get one beer for free, and there are more drinks and Wurst for sale at the Fest. Event tech t-shirts are available for purchase for $11. It is best to pre-order during registration to guarantee your chosen shirt size. At the Wurstfest, you can enjoy German Bier, Wurst und Musik and pretend you traveled to Bavaria without the 12 hour plane ride.
